What Is Included with The Product?
The so-called “double” standard softener weighs 32 pounds and is 22 inches tall with a 9.5-inch diameter. This is actually pretty standard for portable water softeners. But don’t be fooled, this is no small tank. It can provide you with up to 16000 gallons of water or a 40-day supply. This is almost double the capacity of many other high-rated portable filters.
You’re also going to benefit from a carrying handle and sturdy cradle base which makes lugging it on your back around the RV park much easier.
You’ll find all the standard features – uses standard table salt (about 2 boxes), cap and plug to prevent leakage, compact size to fit in your RV on the road, and high-grade, premium resin.
We aren’t provided with any details about the resin, other than that it’s “high-grade.” We’ll just have to take their word for it.
Extra features include a useful 360° swivel top so connecting it up is simple and a larger than normal mouth for pouring in your table salt. It can easily be connected to your RV with something as simple as a normal garden hose.
What We Liked About the Product
Often we find that when companies try to modify their products so they’re more convenient and user-friendly, they invest in tech.
Manufacturers try to make regeneration or other additional functions available with just the press of a button, so to speak. Often this compromises the product completely or overcomplicates it even more.
That’s not what On the Go have done. If anything, they’ve simplified their softener/conditioner by stripping back the tech.
No tools, electricity or complex training is needed to operate this device. All you need to do is set it up by following the instructions to have it working at optimum in no time at all. Even with low-pressure drops, this softener will ensure high flow rates by itself.
On the Go estimate that with proper care, this softener can last for 10 solid years with average use. Caring is relatively simple – your regeneration time of 30 minutes is not the quickest on the market, but it’s not a drag either.
You also have a back-flush function, whereby you connect your water source to the softener outlet for about 5 minutes.
Finally, we really liked the support and installation instructions from On the Go – they’re very simple, just a step by step list to follow.
The instructions are actually identical for any On the Go model and are available online to download as a PDF file. This level of convenience is missing from similar portable softeners on the market.
What Is Missing
This unit is designed to be portable – but for RVs with some storage space.
If you’re just heading out for the weekend or on vacation once a year, you’ll actually be better off with a smaller model with quicker back-flushing and regeneration. This particular model from On the Go is one of their larger sizes that can provide you with soft water for up to 40 days.
Save yourself a little money and a fair amount of space by getting a smaller model for infrequent travel use.
Furthermore, if you don’t regenerate the softener when needed, it can actually damage the whole system and you’ll need to do a “super regen” to get it back to normal.
Luckily the On the Go customer service team are happy to talk you through this, but it’s a hassle we’d rather have avoided in the first place.
The technology for testing the hardness of the water is simply tested strips to dip in. In our opinion, we thought this could have been upgraded considering the price and problem with late regenerations.
We liked this water softener – all of our negative points are really nitpicking. This is a reliable, sturdy softener from a respectable company.
You really can’t go wrong with it and if you’ve enjoyed On the Go softeners before, this one won’t let you down. The downside to this, of course, is that it’s very simple. If you’ve got high expectations or are looking for great tech features to make your life even easier (and show off to your RV neighbors) this is not really for you.
